Winter in Philadelphia brings cozy nights and reliance on our heating systems. However, this season also increases the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, a danger often called the “silent killer” because the gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.
Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of the incomplete burning of fuel sources like natural gas, oil, or wood, commonly found in furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, and stoves. A malfunctioning home heater or blocked ventilation can trap this toxic gas inside your home, with potentially deadly consequences.

Here are essential tips to keep your family safe in Philadelphia this winter:

1. Install and Maintain CO Alarms

The single most important safety measure is a working carbon monoxide alarm. Pennsylvania and Philadelphia law require the installation of CO detectors in residential buildings with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.
  • Placement: Install UL-listed CO alarms on every level of your home, especially in a central location outside each separate sleeping area.
  • Maintenance: Test your alarms monthly and change the batteries at least twice a year. A good reminder is to change them when you adjust your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
  • Replacement: CO alarms typically have a lifespan of 5-7 years, so check the manufacturer’s instructions for the replacement date.

2. Schedule Annual Professional Inspections

Prevention is key. Have a qualified professional inspect and service all fuel-burning appliances, including your furnace, water heater, and fireplace, at the beginning of every heating season.
A professional can ensure that:
  • Appliances are properly installed and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Flues, chimneys, and vents are connected correctly, in good condition, and free from any blockages, including snow or debris after a storm.
For residents with natural gas service, you can contact the Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) Emergency Hotline at (215) 235-1212 if you suspect a gas leak.

3. Know What Not to Do

Avoid dangerous behaviors that can lead to CO buildup:
  • Never use a gas oven or range to heat your home.
  • Never use a charcoal or gas barbecue grill, a portable camp stove, or a gasoline-powered generator indoors or in an attached garage, even with the door open. Generators should be operated outdoors at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and vents.
  • Never idle a car in an attached garage.

4. Recognize the Symptoms of CO Poisoning

Early symptoms of CO poisoning are often mistaken for the flu and can include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.
If you suspect CO poisoning:
  1. Get fresh air immediately. Move everyone, including pets, outdoors or to a well-ventilated area.
  2. Call 911 or the fire department immediately.
  3. Call the
    Poison Control Center

     at 1-800-222-1222.

Tell the physician you suspect CO poisoning, as it can be diagnosed by a blood test done soon after exposure.
By taking these precautions, you can ensure a safe and warm heating season for your family in Philadelphia. Stay vigilant, stay safe, and enjoy peace of mind this winter.
